Zoonosis

An infectious disease that spreads from animals to humans.

Zoonoses can be one-time spillovers (single human case from animal exposure) or sustained outbreaks if the pathogen adapts to spread between humans.

Most hantaviruses are obligate spillover zoonoses — they can infect humans but not transmit human-to-human. Andes virus is the partial exception.
