The proportion of confirmed cases of a disease that result in death.
CFR differs from infection-fatality ratio (IFR), which counts deaths among everyone infected, including subclinical cases. For hantavirus the IFR is harder to estimate because mild infections may go undiagnosed.
Reported CFR can fluctuate when surveillance changes — for example, broader testing that catches milder cases will lower the apparent CFR.
