A severe, often fatal lung disease caused by New World hantaviruses.
HPS is also called "hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome" because cardiac dysfunction often accompanies the pulmonary failure.
There is no licensed vaccine and no proven antiviral. Treatment is supportive: early ICU admission, careful fluid management, mechanical ventilation and ECMO for the most severe cases.
