The presence of virus particles in the bloodstream.

Clinical implication: collect blood for RT-PCR early in suspected hantavirus disease, before serology becomes informative.

Veterinary implication: chronic, lifelong viremia in the rodent reservoir is what makes hantaviruses persistent in nature.
