How sources are classified
Tier 1 · Official — surveillance authorities (WHO, CDC, ECDC), peer-reviewed journals, and indices recognised as authoritative biomedical infrastructure (PubMed, Europe PMC, Crossref, OpenAlex, GBIF). Used for case counts, alerts, and citation backing.
Tier 2 · Reference — community-maintained encyclopaedias and preprint servers. Used for narrative summaries with explicit revision/version provenance.
Tier 3 · News — global event databases and country-localised news aggregators. Used for the live signal feed; never quoted as authoritative case data.
What "freshness" means
- Healthy: last successful pipeline fetch within 60 minutes.
- Stale: 1 h–6 h since last fetch (transient network or rate-limit).
- Unknown: never fetched in current deployment.
