Chile is the second hub of Andes-virus circulation. Cases concentrate in Aysén, Los Lagos and southern Magallanes regions, with case-fatality consistently at 30% or higher despite well-resourced ICU care.
Geographic concentration
The Aysén Region accounts for roughly 40% of Chilean Andes-virus cases. The Los Lagos and Los Ríos regions add another large fraction. Cases follow the Andean forest belt where Oligoryzomys longicaudatus is most abundant.
Person-to-person clusters
Chile has documented multiple family clusters and at least two healthcare-associated transmissions of Andes virus, contributing to the body of evidence that this species spreads between humans.
